I can remember one event very clearly, it was a Saturday night and I had gone to the Sheffield Empire with my friend to see Henry Hall.
Sheffield was bombed that night and we had just got on the train to come home. We had to stay on the train all night in the pitch darkness and we could see and hear the bombing in Sheffield.
Our lads at Greesborough battery did their best, we could here the flack from there.
I only got home at 9 a.m the next morning and my mother's hair had turned white over night, I can remember it so vividly. She had been so anxious and thought I had been killed in the Sheffield bombing. I never realised it could affect some one so much!
