I was born in Longsight in Manchester in 1917. During the War there was bombing close by. I remember the whole family squeezed underneath the kitchen table when the sirens sounded. On one occasion the bombs were so near that we felt the wind as they fell. We felt the vibrations as they came down. When the All Clear sounded the whole family climbed out to see the extent of the damage.
The bombs had just missed our house but hit across the road. The Germans seem to have been aiming for the Picture House which was diagonally across from us - just a few yards away. It was flattened.
People were killed and injured in the raid and there was lots of damage to property and shops. Some buildings were on fire but the Fire Service got it all under control very quickly.
