One night when my grandadwas on patrol with another policman in the Brady Square and Washington station area what looked like a parachute landed with a thump. After a while they foundit and it had a bomb attached to it. My grandad went to phone the station for help, no mobile phones in those days, while the otherpoliceman guarded it. When the police sergeant and others arrived they had to close the area off and clear the nearby houses and get the people to safty. They had to send for the bomb disposal people from Cattrik to come and defuse it and my grandad and the others had to guard the bomb for 15 hours until they arrived. When they arrived the bomb was blown up and it left a crater the size of a tennis court. It was belived that the bomb had been meant for Washington Chemical Works which was nearby. We still have my grandads police hat and whistle. (see pics)
My family did not like to talk much about the action they saw and what they did during the war as like many other people some of it was hard to talk about.
