On the night of 26th April 1943 my Mother and my sister Cynthia and me were sheltering under a Morrison table shelter in the front room of our bungalow in Green Lane. The siren had sounded and we could hear the distinct sound of German aircraft. There was a terrific explosion- our whole bungalow seemed to jump and our chandelier came crashing down. After the all clear had sounded I remember looking from our back door and seeing Armadale Road ablaze.
In the morning we could see the devastation and later that day we learned that several people had been killed. Some included parents of my schoolfriends.
What has haunted me all these years is that German bomb aimer- a split second later on his release button- and I wouldn't be telling this story since Green Lane is at the end of Armadale Road.
We have got a pretty good idea of the intended target. I may be wrong but my old infant school- St. James Infants- had been commandeered by the R.A.F. (I'm told) and was in use as a fighter control base for Tangmere airfield. I remember too that the roof of our bungalow was raised by the blast and settled crookedly (this was put right many years later.
