My name is Rachel Freeman and i am a student at Marden HIgh school. I am writing this story on behalf of my Great Grandfather, James Baird. They fully understand the conditions of the website.
In December 1942, my great grandfather James Baird, at the age of 21, was on board the ship H.M.S Repulse. The ship was sailing past the coast of Pearl Harbour when unexpectedly the ship was torpedoed by the Japanese.
My great grandfather and his other ship mates were captured and held prisoners of wa in Japan.
Although i never met my great grandfather i have heard many stories of his experience in the war. I have heard this from my mother, Christine Freeman.
One of the stories i have heard is that he was tortured and beaten by the Japanese. Not many of the captured survived. Luckily my great grand father did but his experience after was far from pleasent!
He experience was unforgetable and unnerving and he was never able to forget the terrible experiences he accured. He suffered from flash backs and panic attacks which effected the rest of his life.
I am very proud and honoured to know that one of my relatives was such a brave and couragous man. His stories of the war have been passed down the family and will never be forgotten!
