My Grandad was born in 1936 and linved as a young boy through the war. He can't remember much about the war as he was just young, but the things he has told me about are very interesting points about living in the country during the war.
The German bombing planes had to fly over this area of cumbria to get to cities such as Newcastle and Glasgow. My Grandad told me that the planes used to follow up the lakes to direct their way up to these cities. He could remember being in his house with his family, and being very nervous as they could hear the sirens of the planes going past. Also he told me that planes didn't have radar in those days so when it was misty they couldn't see where thaey were going so they often crashed into the mountain of Skiddaw. This would result in planes being smashed up and the pieces being scatered about. He than told me that him and his friends used to go out and play in the pieces of the planes. This could often be very dangerous but they thought that it was fun.
He could remember that they always had to take their gas mask to school and if they didn't they got into very serious trouble.
