This was the beginning of the war and I think I believed in those days that my teachers were absolute geniuses. We used to eat imported eggs and we had some eggs that came from Poland, written on one of the eggs was some Polish writing. So I brought it to school thinking one of my teachers could interpret that, it could have been some secret message about the war. Unfortunately none of them could, so I then returned home with the egg. The sad part of the story is that when I got halfway home, I had a fight with somebody and the egg got crushed into small pieces. And that鈥檚 my first memory of wartime experiences. It must have been about August 1939, because once the war had started, of course, there were no imports from Poland.
