I was 7 when the war began. My school was closed and it became an ambulance station so were were split between two schools but there was insufficient room for us all so I didn't go to school at all. I went on Home Service where we were in people's homes for schooling. We woud go for either the onrning or afternoon until they sorted the schools out. We were all proficient swimmers as we were always being taken to the swimming baths for a class because we didn't need desks here and there weren't enough! I know it sounds strange but you just took it in your stride 'cause you were young.
Sheffield was very badly bombed. I rember that close to the Sheffield Wednesday football ground a land mine dropped and killed quite a few.
