I was a toddler in Oxford during the war and I remember going down to the cellar when the planes came over. As far as I know, Oxford was never bombed. We were told that this was because Hitler wanted Oxford to be his Headquarters once he had invaded and conquered Britain!
My dad was wounded in France, I think. A bullet went through his arm and through the leg of a man behind him, this putting 2 men out of action.
My dad was evacuated back to England and was sent to Ronkswood Hospital in Worcester for treatment, not to Oxford.
I remember that after the war my sister and I counted all the 'pink gates' which replaced the metal field gates which had been melted down during the war. This was in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Berkshire. No one else I know remembers this. It would be nice if someone else could remember! Does anyone??
