My Grandma's father went away three days before the war started and did not come home until the end. When she was 9 her dad came back from the war and her mum ran up to him and threw her arms around him and Grandma pulled her away from him and told her not to go kissing strange men. (Grandma's real name is Valerie). She lived in Nottingham then.
Great Grandad died before I was born. During the six years at war there was no news of where he was, but apparently he went to Sicily then Burma. He was a radio operator and was mentioned in despatches and received medals and commendations and stars.
During the war effort Great Grandma went to work and Grandma was looked after during the week by Auntie. Families without children took in evacuees, and Grandma remembers seeing children from London being offered by walking down the road with officials knocking at doors.
My Grandad died before I was born but Grandma tells me that he was evacuated to the country and loved it. There was no running water. Grandad's father worked in an airplane factory and received a commendation from the King.
