I can remember the good old days. People were helpful and always looked after each other. We had very large families. Sometimes there were four to five sleeping in a bed. Cold nights we would take up the clippie mats and put them onto the beds to keep warm. People also put Fentiman鈥檚 pop bottles in bed to keep warm. The toilets were outside this is what we used to call the mucky middens. Washing days were on Mondays. Our shopping was done at Thompsons Red Stores or the Co-operative Society. Our shopping was done on Fridays. Contents were 1lb flour, 4 oz butter, two rashers bacon, 3 eggs, 4 oz lard. Everyone helped each other. When people died people were in morning for a week and always wore black. In the blackout windows were marked with white stripes. Kids in winter time used to slide down the slag heaps on shovels. Everyone helped each other. Miners always went to the Club on Sunday鈥檚 white shirts cuff links. Dinners were left in the oven heated up. Gas masks were taken to school. Can also remember the Airships in the sky.
