I can remember being reported killed at Monte Cassino on the actual night of the attack. My mate and I were in a bivouac on the floor and someone came along, gave us a kick, and said, 'Come along, you two.' So off we went with the captain from the South African Boer Construction Company and the sergeant. We jumped in a jeep and off we went. After about half an hour we arrived at a big field with a load of machinery in it; bulldozers, scrapers, graders - you name it, it was there. He said, ' I want you to guard these.' I said, 'From what?' He replied, 'Well, the Germans might drop some parachutists down.' And I said, 'If they come down this way, I go that way!' We stopped there for about six weeks before we were 'found' because on their way back to the camp, the captain and the sergeant were killled. So nobody knew where we were for those six weeks! We just looked after ourselves during that time.
