Hugh Johnstone of Dalmellington recalls the mining industry during the war.
The local men worked mostly in the mining industry - but when the war started the men working at the surface were called for army service. The men working underground stayed at home as mining was a reserved occupation.
The miners daily rate of pay in 1943 was 10 shillings (50p) for the faceman who worked at the coalface and his drawer (assistant) was paid 9 shillings (45p). In April 1943 a commission reviewed the wages and Lord Porter recommended a bonus of 3 shillings and 4p a week and I and my older brother saved our "Porter Award" and had a holiday in Morecambe. Mind you we had to cycle to Morecambe after a day slaving down the pit.
