During WW2 I lived with my family in Northolt, Middlesex, quite close to the Northolt Aerodrome, which at that time was home to Polish squadrons of Hurricanes and a few Spitfires.

I remember one afternoon my brother and I were standing on a small hill overlooking the runway of the airfield, (I was approximately l0 years old and he was 12 years) when a Wellington bomber made its approach to land. As this plane was considerably larger than the customary Hurricanes, we became quite excited at the prospect of seeing such a big aircraft land. As the plane banked to straighten up to approach the runway, it just dropped out of the sky and exploded. Ammunition in its magazines ignited causing a continuous fireball for some time. We understood later that it crashed on waste ground just in front of the runway where sadly local children's were playing football. I recall that approximately 21 people were killed.

On the same runway approach, within the War period, a RAF Dakota aircraft crash landed on top of a house. This became quite a local attraction as it sat on the rooftop more or less intact.

Message 1 - Wellington T2564

Posted on: 01 November 2003 by Ross McNeill

Hi Bob,

The Wellington had taken off from RAF Talbenny in South Wales on the 18th October 1942. It had a normal crew of five men and was taking a further 10 men for leave in London and interview at Coastal Command, Northwood.

In addition to the 15 onboard the Wellington, 2 women and 4 children were killed at the football match.

Regards
Ross

Hi Ross
Many thanks for the information on the Wellington. I have often wondered about the details.

I passed on your message to my brother, who now lives in Canada, who has just responded and reminded me that the plane was white and covered in antennae.

How come you had such detail of the crash?

Regards, Bob

Message 3 - Wellington T2564

Posted on: 02 November 2003 by Ross McNeill

Hi Bob,

I am researching Coastal Command aircraft and crew losses for a series of books. The Wellington details are from the draft Volume 2.

The aircraft was from No.311 Sqn which was a Coastal unit doing anti submarine patrols over the Bay of Biscay and the Western Approaches. White or seagull grey colour was to make them less conspicious over the sea and the antennae were for the airborne radar sets.

The airmen killed were mostly from three crews:
F/L V Student
P/O F Bulis
Sgt J Svec
Sgt J Blaha
F/L V Hanka
P/O A Bunzl
P/O J Jebacek
P/O B Gissubel
F/Sgt F Dolezal
Sgt V Rajecki
F/Sgt F Stoklasek
Sgt J Cech
Sgt V Gotzlinger
Cpl E Paclik
P/O G Strauss-Leemans

A bitter blow for the squadron to loose so many experienced airmen in one incident.

Regards
Ross
