our platoon embarked on the landing craft at felixstowe on the 3rd of june 1944. our 3ton commers were loaded with all the equipment to transport the first landing strip for the r.a.f. fighters to land, re-arm and refuel in normandy. our craft was carrying a mixture of tanks and other vehicles. we set out ti sea and after moving out for a long time we saw the coastline and thought this is it, only to find out it was our own shoreline.we joined the main convoy late afternoon on the 5th june what a sight, destroyers and other warships were dashing back and forth. darkness fell and throuhout the nightwe saw explosions and 2 ships on fire. morning dawned, the sight was amazing, there were 100,s and 100,s of ships of all sizes, our captain weaved our craft in and out, then rammed our caft at the beach, we were here on gold beach aromanches normandy. the resistance was a little confusing untill our sgt. and platoon commander got us organized it was here i saw my first dead soldier, a sgt. one of quite a few on the beach.we were led to our unloading point someway off the beach to the side of a wood there we engaged the first germans, a few very young lads with an old german officer who gave them-selves up without a fight after unloading our job was back on the beach receiving our loads from thr amfibious ducks, who were ferrying nets of supplies from the ships to the beach and a small crane onto our lorries to be dispatchede to various dumps. we encounted more flack then because jerry had his guns organised more. we did this job for a week and then moved forward to caen where we carried on with our roll as infantry transport. i shall never forget the scenes and experiences and thank god i was one of the fortunate ones we made it through to germany but thats another story ps the landing strip was fully opperational the next day june 7th ex/sgt l whitehouse.
