Can some one explain how the system of rationing was operated? Did people of all walks of life and means receive the same number and value of rationing coupons, or did they have to pay for each coupon?
I have to answer students' questions frequently on the details of rationing, and this is one area I am rather vague about. I know that people could pay for things with cash, legally or illegally (i.e. was paying for things only done on the black market?)
Did people get rationing coupons with their wages as part of their pay or were they exchanged for cash in the post office, town hall, or somewhere else?
Many thanks for any help on this home front topic
