I arrived in bedford just as the war began, with my mother and two brothers, at bedford railway station we were taken to John Banyon church in mill street. in the church hall we were greated by w.r.v.s and many volenteers. i was just 8 years old my two brothers 7+2 years. Bunk beds were all around us, blankets, water urns with hot water for tea it seemed to be very hetic and very sad as we had left my dear father because he joined up for the R.A.F so mother was very lonley. After about 4 hours it seemed to me a lady came into the hall and said she would"Take a family to her home" so we never did sleep in the hall, but in a very splendid house at 34 The Embankment, Bedford- just opposite the suspension bridge- I slept in the maids room at the end of a long hall and my mother and my brothers had a very large bed with a very high mattress (feather i believe). We went to the British Restruant in Cauldwell Street for our meals and had great fun with other children- we had concerts, to helpus all keep happy- my cousin and I sang "Playmates" that was well received by the audience. My aunt and her children also came to Bedford. After about a year our little family went to live in Hovey Hills for a while and great to have a place all on our own as a family- when the bombing stopped in London we went home for a while- to Seyton London, but the bombs soon returned and we all went to Kettering , back home for a while once more and then again evacuated to Chester- my father returned from the war in 1945 and at last we were one big happy family. They were dreadful times but I have some happy memories.
