We lived near Biggleswade, and I can remember the Germans dropping flares on their way to bomb Coventry. We had a shelter in Windyridge, but it used to let in water.

I remember that we had an evacuee. He was a young Jewish boy, and his parents used to come up and visit him.

My husband was an Air Raid Warden. He used to have to patrol the village at night. I don鈥檛 think I was ever that worried about his safety, because we didn鈥檛 see much bombing really.

He wasn鈥檛 called up into the army, as we were market gardeners, and therefore had to help keep the country supplied with vegetables. We had our own cow as well, so we never went short of milk or cream.
