As the War got underway the Barnardos children were evacuated. From Boys' Garden City, Woodford Bridge, we were taken to Euston Hall, Euston Village, Elverton, near Thetford. It was the property of the Duke of Grafton.
For the four months that we were there we had no teachers. We cleaned the rooms and went for country rambles. There was some land clearing to do, so we helped out burning gorse bushes. When there were air-raid we all trooped out in our nightshirts and hurried to the shelter.
Then it was off to the Naval Training school at Watts. We arrived by train at its own station. We had strict drill. The Navy's brass bands having been redeployed as stretchermen we replaced them.
I always recall what they said about the Barnardo Boys. That we went around in bare feet from late spring to early autumn.
