my father was a royal navy stoker, he served on one illustrious ship the ulysees, also the denbigh castle. He was torpedoed in the kola inlet near murmansk and was rescued by a russian trawler and survived. he spent the latter part of the war in the southern hemisphere in th fight for singapore and at the end of the war was in australia. his abiding memory was of the russian convoys and the hardship involved. He became very morose during the months of nov and dec reflecting on the comrades he had lost during those times. He was proud to have served with his australian comrades but did not have the same affection for the americans. He is now dead but i can only relay the words he imparted to me before that. He suffered shrapnel wounds through his life but remained a proud and moral person and stood by his own experiences and values to the end and did not dwell on his misfortunes but strove to fight against injustices in civvy life as well. i hope his fight continues through me as i also strive to fight injustice in the modern world.
