I was born in Wroughton, Swindon, in 1919. We lived half way up a big hill called Priors Hill and at the top of the hill was RAF Wroughton, the American air base. The Americans were very good to us, always giving us sweets and chocolate. I will always remember how kind they were.
We grew most of our own food and also had an allotment.
My father worked for the Great Western Railway in Swindon in the engine shop.
I went into service and used to sleep in. I did the cleaning. It was a big house and my employers owned a shop in Swindon. I worked with them for a very long time.
I got married during the war having met my husband when he was in the RAF. We had 1 daughter but sadly my husband was killed overseas
