JESSIE ROEBURY (NEE MCKEAN) lived in Johnston Renfewshire where the blitz came very suddenly and unexpectedly. She remembers seeing people coming from Greenock with just bundles of possession, which was all they had left - and the horror still remains with her. People who were badly burned, and the Clydebank housing estate which was completely flattened in just two nights. She cannot understand man's inhumanity to man.
Jessie joined the forces in 1942 and spent three years in the Royal Artillery as a clerk in Leeds.
One friend called Maisie never went without her hat - even in the bath.
Once on leave in Manchester with her friends, Jessie missed them on the way back and had to get a later train. Walking along in the dark she heard something, which caught up with her...she started to run and was chased home by a goat.
If you obeyed the rules, she said life in the Forces was 'liveable'
