I was born in 1925. When I was 11 years old I joined St Johns Ambulance. My father was already a member. I was 14 years old when war was declared in 1939. One night we were home when we heard Dublin was bombed. The planes were near water. They thought they dropped the bombs in the water but instead the bombs dropped on the houses. My father and I went down to the North Strand where the bombs had dropped. So we helped the injured and the dying. Some had lost limbs. One young girl had been to a party. She was in her party dress and her hair was all curled. But all that was found of her was her head and shoulders.

We got the injured to hospital and went with them to help. It was something I shall never forget. When the war was over the Irish Government gave us a medal for services during the war years.

Message 1 - St. Johns Ambulance

Posted on: 12 April 2005 by Audrey Lewis - WW2 Site Helper

Dear Lillian Danby (csydevon),
Thank you for your story. How moving! What a wonderful service you gave during the war - something you will never forget, as you say.
People don't often get a chance to read about 'picking up the pieces'.
Thank you for sharing your story with us.
I was a child during the war and helped to raise funds for the Red Cross. It was nothing like your experience though! Yours was front line.
Kind regards,
Audrey Lewis
