I was born 10 June 1939.I lived at Waterloo Terrace number 7. Stapleton Road by Trinity Road library near Piggy Lane. It’s not there now. I’d 2 sisters. The elder sister’s just died. She was 11 years older than me. My other sis Megan is 7 years older than me. I was the last one. I never seen my father ‘cos he was in the war.
When they got evacuated, our mother wouldn’t let them take me. She was adamant I would stay with her but my 2 sisters went to near Poole. And do you know what? .. My older sister stayed a couple of nights and worried about my Mum and me. She was 11 or 12. So she walked and got lifts and came all the way home! Left her sis and came all the way.
I was 3 or 4 and I was lively like. We used to go out in the road and watch the firemen. There was me, Rickie and Piggy. We all had slang names. When we were growing up then, you had to learn quick. Our mother would be upstairs to go round with the mop and I used to say “ Mum! What would you say to Hitler if he was here?” And she used to get very angry and whack that brush.
