We had not been married long when my husband was in the First Parachute Regiment, that was formed in India and he was one of the first to join in 1939 in Arnham. He originally came from Chelmsford and was the only one that came back.
He had managed to break away from the Route March to Poland. He journeyed through the woods at night to avoid detection. Because had he been seen, there was no doubt he would have been shot.
He was taken care of by German women, who fed him and let him help himself to anything he wanted. Although his only request was some food and a bed to sleep on during the daytime. The journey took two weeks travelling by himself through Germany.
He came across An American officer that had seen his Red Berret and asked where he had come from. The officer could not believe he had managed to make it. During this time he never recieved any of the letters or parcels I had sent over the seven months while he was a Prisinor of War.
I heard from the War Office that my husband had been killed and I was 5 months pregnant at the time. While at Hoffman's, a message came through on German Radio that he was safe. Messages over the radio to loved one's were restricted to 12 words. The messages was that he was safe and would return home soon.
The next day I recieved thousands of letters that he had sent along with those from Army officers had sent messages from all over the UK about his heroic story. He had sent a Telegram saying that he had arrived home.
Suprisngly there was no Media coverage of his Great Escape and he never recieved a medal.
The bullet that had injured him had made a hole that went in and came out on the other side of his body. The Doctor had never seen anything like it before. It was a miricle.
LUCKY ESCAPE
I was working at Hoffman's along with a friend where I did a a month on and a month off, but I didn't like working nights. I had decided that I wanted to start coming in during the day. My friend insisted I came in at night because they had a lot of fun. Monday came and a V-Bomb hit Hoffman's, causing lots of damage and she was killed in the blaze. Her name was Connie Franklin.
