I was evacuated from Liverpool in September 1939, at the time of the first evacuation.

We travelled from Lime Street Station to Carnarvon, North Wales and finished up in Lambert, which is at the foot of Snowdonia.

We went into a church hall, where we resided until our accomodation was decided.

Local families would choose who they wanted to take in. Generally, this was according to the size of their house or family situation. Sometimes they just wanted children, which could be difficult.

There were an awful lot of people from Liverpool who stayed in Lambert during this period, and I remember hearing of families of up to eight members residing in one room!!!

I can also remember the railway station in Lambert, they brought back all the men from Dunkirk to this station.

One day the driver of the train took me and another girl, and we walked up the railway tracks.... all the way to the top of Snowdon!

The funny thing was, it was freezing cold, and we were wearing skirts and stockings! We felt ridiculous!

The next time I remember after this is just wanting to get home. We managed to get back just before the May Blitz.

We were living in the Everton region of Liverpool, which was on very high ground, but we were practically bombed out.

All the slates on our roof, all the glass in our windows, everything blew out.

But alot of us did not want to be evacuated again, we wanted to stay.

I remember the day an incindery was dropped on a house near ours. An entire family was wiped out, it was dreadful.

But it was not all sad memories. I got married in March 1945, when my fiancee was home on leave.

And in the May of that year, we took the train down to London for the day.

We joined all the VE Celebrations on the streets, and jumped the train home in the evening totally exhausted

I suppose VE day was our honeymoon...

Oh such a fabulous way to celebrate our marriage!

What a lovely story. I've really enjoyed reading this story with my Volunteers at Wrexham Library, all ready and raring to go and gather stories.

Lambert - Llanberis I think you meant.

Best wishes
