This story was submitted to the People's War site by Maggie Smith from CSV Action Desk on behalf of Kenneth Bailey and has been added to the site with his permission. Kenneth Bailey understands the sites terms and conditions.

When we were about 10 or 11 years old we used to go around in a big gang playing games such as tip cat, hide and seek and football with a real old leather ball. When we had air raids we used to go out and collect pieces of shrapnel, some pices still being warm! We would collect all we could while everyone else was in the shelters and later sell them. We would also collect lead from houses that had been bombed and melt them down to make an army of lead soldiers.
