The first Christmas of the war, I went into Birmingham City Centre with my mom, grandma and little sister to do our Christmas shopping. We were comimg out of Lewis's in Old Square, all loaded down with Christmas presents(I remember I had a blow football set that year) when we spotted a spitfire and a meschersmitt in the sky above our heads having a dog-fight. Soon, quite a big crowd gathered and we all started to cheer on the spitfire pilot.
Suddenly, lots of policemen appeared and started blowing whistles. We were all ushered into the toilets in Old Square.Unfortunately, they chose to send us down to the gents'toilet - which was a bit embarrassing to both women shoppers and the men using the toilets.
