In May 1945 I was 12 years old and growing up in the North Nottinghamshire village of Bircotes. My father worked in the local colliery which was named after the ancient village of Harworth.
In the early hours of Saturday 5th May my Mother Alice had a boy, Brian, who proved to be very sickly and who would not take nourishment. In the afternoon of the 8th VE day, he died and was buried a few days later on the Friday. I assume he was so sickly that he was baptised at home but am unsure about this.
After all these years I dont remember much about unhappy circumstances, VE Day or any celebrations apart from the fact that I didn't have to go outside in all weathers to put up and take down blackout shutters anymore.
