I remember the day that war broke out — it was a lovely day on reflection. I remember hearing it on the radio and my Mum crying, I had three elder brothers and my dad - I think she was concerned that they’d end up going. My dad didn’t but my brothers did and they went into each of the forces. I had no idea what war was like — it was really frightening. I can remember feeling quite upset about it. My three brothers did come back from the war though.
