Fred was only 12yrs old when the war started. He lived with his dad,mam and 15yr old sister. It wasnt till 1943 when the war affected him. And it was 1943 when he was evaucated to the countryside with all the other children. They were sent there for protection from all the heavy bombing. the children were sent by trians to different places and everyone was split up. But Fred was lucky enough to be with his sister the whole time. All the children had to eat on the trains were a paper bag containing:
apple,
orange,
pack of biscuits,
tin of corn beef.
And that food was for the journey of the countryside.Fred was evcauted to Staindrop village, Darlington. In the country people were waiting to take the children to they homes and care for them and make sure they were feed and health. When the children arrived to the countryside social workers were they to meet them and sort them out with they careers. However many children escaped back to they mothers an fathers. to make sure no children got lost, children were given tags to put on they clothes some people know who they are and they school and the age and the name of they careers.
These careers would take care of them for the duration of the war. Fred and the other children thought it was really hard being away from family anf friends, and maybe they wouldnt see they family and friends again because the war was wiping out many people. To keep children and adults extra safe from gas etc, they were giving gas mask that people had to carry aroudn with them everyday.
The careers Fred had weere horrible and nasty towards Fred and his sister. Everything neal they got was cold and uncooked. Fred spent alot of time with his sister. His was always annoying and aruging with his sister and his career. The house Fred stayed at was a big clean house with many rooms. However Fred and his sister was in the smallest room of the house.
