Towards the end of the war, my Mother was employed by the Great Central Railway as a porter on the station in Great Central Street and on one occasion, I went to meet her and we were to go home together after she had finished her shift. Whilst waiting around on the platform, a very lengthy train pulled in, when it had stopped, all the doors suddenly banged open and out got hundreds of American soldiers, I stood there in bewilderment, eyes agog and mouth wide open. I stood in the middle of the platform and the soldiers passed either side of me and then one or two started to give me some sweets and chewing gum but I took the initiative and began calling, 鈥淎ny Gum Chum鈥 I got many laughs but lots and lots of candy. It was of course the commencement of the 鈥楧鈥 day landings operation when troops were initially dispatched to all parts of the country.
