John Gardner [my uncle] was a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airbourne. He dropped in Normandy near St. Marie Eglise and had got separated from the rest of his troops. He actually spent two days behind German lines and was smuggled back by the Maquis [the French Resistance]. He then rejoined the troops and went on to take part in the drop in Market Garden at the Grave Bridge. They secured th bridge and were sitting in foxholes near the bridge and they spied some people over the bridge who they thought were the Dutch resistance. They were waving to them across the water. They got up to wave back and they were S.S. so they opened fire on them. My uncle's best man was shot in the head and killed right next to him.
He went on to be part of the occupation force in Germany, dropped against the Chinese in Korea and then went into politics to become an American County Commissioner.
