I was an evacuee during the war. I lived on Merseyside and was sent to Harden near Queensbury. I stayed there a short while.
I remember being o fire watch on etime and seeing a lovely blue light coming down from the sky, but it was a landmine. It landed on a terrace of houses and wiped them out.
I also remember seeing Birkenhead in Liverpool ablaze after and air raid in 1941. It burned for several days. It looked like the whole skyline was on fire.
I joined the WRENS and I went overseas in 1944. I didn't know where I was going be sent to but went by ship in a convoy. There were bepth charges and we were attacked by submarines. It took 7 days to get to the Mediterranean. We landed at Port Said. I was a pay writer for BSO and HMS Mospuito (coastal forces). Sometimes we had to go to their location to pay them before they went elsewhere. I was stationed out there for 20 months and then went to Malta for roughly two and a half years.
