My late father told me of an incident which happened during the London Blitz. When he was called to attend a client鈥檚 premises that had been bombed, to open the safe, since he was the key holder. The company was dealing in Black Market clothing coupons, and had amassed about 拢30,000 in cash. When the safe was opened the heat had been so intense the illicitly stashed money had been reduced to charred ash!!
