I couldn鈥檛 have beared to be away from my mother if I鈥檇 been evacuated. I left school on my 14th birthday and almost straight away got a job in London in a film laboratory and because the war was still on, they had got a contract for the Admiralty, and they were processing films for the Admiralty, and I had to sign the official secrets list at 14 years of age! Because you could see what was going on, you used to watch the film as it was drying and sometimes the boss would run a copy through and perhaps we鈥檇 go and have a little look in his private cinema on the premises.
