I was born 5th May 1939. I lived with mum and dad in Surrey. When I was about 3 my parents and I were in the Anderson shelter. My dad stood on the top step and I was standing with him and I remember seeing this light coming very low across the back gardens. It was not until later when I was told that it was a plane trying to get the wood yard in the next road behind our house. They did not succeed that time but they did sometime later.
I also remember during an air raid they were trying to hit the railway lines that went to london but they missed and dropped the bomb in the middle of the road demolishing a whole row of houses and several people were killed.
My mother and I were evacuated away to Hoylan commen in South Yorkshire where we stayed until it was safe to go home. My dad stayed at home as he was an air raid warden.
