My parents and I were on holiday in the UK when war broke out. My father had to return to Chile where he was in charge of the Missions to Seamen in Valparaiso, but my mother and I thought we would stay on in England for a couple of months more, never realising that transport by sea to Chile would be impossible. It was some years before my mother was able to return. I stayed on in England and spent 2 years working as a Junior in Barclays Bank in Reigate, Surrey, where we were living with relations.
Then I decided it was time for a change and applied to the WRNS. I was accepted as a writer and sent to RNA Hospital in Sherborne, Dorset, where Iworked in the office of the Dispensary. Dorset is a beautiful county and I grew to love it. Whilst there we were entered for a squad drill competition in Weymouth and won it, much to everyone's surprise.
Then came the offer of a commission in the WRNS and I was transferred to HMS Dolphin in Southsea, where I learnt the basic training for signals. After some months I went to Officer Training Csmp in London, finally emerging as a 3rd Officer.
Great excitement ws to follow, as I was posted to Gibraltar as a Cypher Officer, where I worked in the Signals Office until the end of the war. Being South American born of Scottish parents, I was repatriated to Chile, my homeland. I returned later to marry my John in England
