That day, the 3rd. September,1939, my brother & I were being evacuated. Mum took us down to our school situated at the bottom of the street where we were to be mustered & then sent to our, then, unknown destination. When we were crossing Gairbraid Av. to get to the school, Mum stopped us and told us to look down this avenue across Maryhill Rd. & up to the gates of the football stadium. There standing in front of the entry gates was Dad, waving as best he could, as he was carrying a large bag of rolls collected from the local baker. We hadn't seen Dad for a couple of weeks, as a territorial, he had been called up & although we were close to a major army barracks, he & his comrades were billeted in tents on the football pitch. That sight will always be with me, as we were rarely to see dad after this, till the war's end. We finished up in Killin and spent a wonderful six months there.
