We had an uncle who was one of the first set of soldiers to arrive in Dunkirk, as the got off the boat; the Germans were waiting for them. With machine guns, there were quite a lot of them. He laid down and pretended that he was dead. After a short time, he got up a started to run. He saw a man on a bike, and watched him.
The stranger eventually put his bike down, and as soon as he did, my uncle jumped on it, and he got away for a while, until he found his unit again. It took him quite a while to find his unit, he knocked on one woman鈥檚 door for a glass of water, and she slammed it in her face.
It took him a while to find his unit. When they were all together they went down one of the main street in the town, into a caller in a big house. It was full of children hiding down there.
Our uncle passed away about 10 years ago, and he still continued to have nightmares about the event.
