I think my mother must have had problems getting a baby sitter because I had been put to bed long before she decided that we would both go to the VE day celebrations at the Clock Tower in Rugby. She decided there wasn't time to get me dressed so she merely put a coat over my pyjamas. I was mortified with embarressment and hid behind her legs among the crowds. A policeman, obviously deciding to be friendly, cam over to talk to me but all I could do was mutter and hunch my neck up to try to hide my pyjama collar. Never mind national rejoicing, when you were 4 years old wearing your pyjamas in a busy town centre, that was a far more memorable event.
