Ken was lying in bed one night when he was 11(1942)when he heard an aeroplace overhead. Suddenly he heard a loud whistling noise. He had heard the noise before but only on films of bombing raids on the news at the cinema. He knew that the aeroplace had dropped a bomb. He leaped out of bed, ran downstairs and as he reached the bottom he heard a big explosion. "Quickly" said his Mum "get under the stairs. If there is one bomb there will be a lot more.I wonder why the air raid siren wasn't sounded?" They hid under the stiars for w while ands then Ken crept back to his bed because his feet were ice cold. The next day his Mum said "Do you remember that bomb last night? It landed on St George's church. Luckily the church was empty, but if it had landed next to it on the pub at one side or the fish and chip shop on the other, lots of people would have been killed. It wasn't an air raid. It was just one German plane getting rid of its last bomb, which is why the air raid siren wasn't sounded." As told to his Grandchildren in 2003.
