When my Grandma found out about the War she felt scared and very worried. When War broke out my Grandma was about 15 years old. Her whole way of life changed, everywhere she went she had to carry a gas mask and the food she ate was rationed if not stopped completely.
My Grandma was evacuated for a short time, from Kent to Brighton in Sussex. She was told to bring luggage to school, they were put on a train. She was housed with a horrible woman but only for a short time because when she turned 16, a few weeks after she was evacuated, she was allowed home.
Some vivid memories she recalled were of Dunkirk - June 6th 1944, The Second Front. Her Mum had been to register the death of an elderly friend and had been gone for hours. When she returned she said she'd been watching little boats leave for France, not many returned. She lost a lot of cousins and friends. During the War my Grandma trained as a nurse, being a nurse, my Grandma came across a lot of casualties. Soldiers brought back from Europe were put in temporary huts - a lot of stitching and bandaging was done! She also came across civilian casualties hurt in air raids.
My Grandma was relieved when the War was over and she could get back to normal.
