`MEMORIES OF DUNKIRK
A friend of ours was at Dunkirk. He did not talk about it in later years. We did not question him about his experiences, and it is now too late - he died a few years ago. All he told us was that during the retreat to Dunkirk his unit, which had lorries, came across an old, paralysed man sitting alone by the roadside. His family had abandoned him and fled, along with most of the local population. The old man was clutching a dozen eggs in a basket, all he had in the world.
The British soldiers put the old man in their lorry and took him along with them. But when they reached Dunkirk they had to dump the lorries and burn them to prevent the Germans getting them.
By this time the soldiers knew the battle was lost. If they were lucky they would be evacuated to England, but they could not take the old man. They had to leave him there, abandoned for the second time - still clutching his dozen eggs.
Our friend, whose 19th birthday occurred during the retreat to Dunkirk, never forgot that old man and his dozen eggs.
