Although the guns rarely ceased at night, one thursday at 10:30 hours I and two other men were sent on routine patrol along the line. I was armed with an Enfield IV, equipped with a telescopic site so as you can understand i was nervous about siting any gerry patrols as i'd be the one having to do the shooting. After about half an hour of walking we stopped by an abandoned Matilda and rested briefly. But as i leant against that hunk of metal i felt uneasy, as if someone was watching us. I spun around and scanned the german front observation lines through my gun site. Now to this day i swear on my own mothers eternal soul, that just as i was about to pull my gun away i spotted none other than Field Marshall Erwin Rommell himself. Now of course this story seems farfetched to you all, and your thinking 'if this is true then why did Rommel die later on in the war and not there at that moment?' well, the answer to your question is simple; my weapon jammed. Not only that but the two privates that accompanied me both had standard enfields, and without the site i couldn't make that kind of shot. So you see i kicked myself everyday for years for not being able to assasinate one of Adolf's greatest military commanders. I'd like to thank my grandson Peter for helping me tell you my story. Yours, Ronnie
