My Grandad would not speak a lot about the war, but the stories I was told by my Grandma and my Dad tell me he was a very brave man just being there. His story is no different to the hundreds of men that fought in the war, but I would like to honour him by just saying that he battled to survive Dunkirk and kill the German who killed his best friend in front of him. Up until the Dunkirk program I could never understand fully why he never talked about the war, but I can honestly say I now understand. What a hellish nightmare it must have been for him and by not talking about it, in a way must have helped (even though I know deep down no matter what he could never forget). My Grandad will always be a hero to me, even though he was very modest about it. Let's never forget the People who fought and died for their country.
