On a bright February day in 1943, the day after a fierce air raid by the Germans on Sunderland, a young Mother took her baby to a friend鈥檚 house to visit. When she arrived the baby was fast asleep, so she left the pram in the washhouse. Shortly afterwards the Air Raid Warden came shouting to the door, 鈥淓veryone out! There鈥檚 an unexploded bomb in the washhouse.鈥 The young Mother grabbed the pram and ran as fast as she could, as far away as possible. The bomb was found and quickly diffused. That baby was me, my third birthday was V. E. Day (Victory of Europe Day) 鈥 May 8th 1945. Thanks to my Mother and the Air Raid Warden. I am still alive to tell the tale.
