My first three weeks training was in Newcastle, before being accepted for driver training.
After my training to be a driver at Camberley I was stationed at Rise Park Hall HQ, fifteen miles from Hull, as a driver, where we drove mainly 15cwt vehicles and utility vans. I was later made the Commanding Officer's driver. We had 32 searchlights in the area of Hull. We had various duties, bringing in men from the sites, collecting equipment, etc.
One particular funny incident occured when I was collecting geese for Christmas dinner from a local farm. One got loose as I was driving along and grabbed me by the back of my neck and would not let go! I had to get the sergeant with me to pull it off me, and I was left with a sore wound.
Another dangerous time was when an airraid in our vicinity was quite terrifying, and myself and co-drivers ran up into a trench in a field. Other times, driving through Hull was pretty dangerous, as we frequently got caught in raids.
Later I was sent to London on a mechanics course, and experienced the raids in 1943. After the course I was posted to REME Recovery Section in Aldershot until May 1946 when I was demobbed.
I was later sent to Germany with the Control Commission.
