At the age of 21 I was conscripted to Penninsula Barracks, Warrington on Good Friday 1942. After intensive clerical training at Walthamstow, SW England I joined the 44th ACK Brigade as a clerk. First I served in Manchester, then I moved to the Isle of Wight which was to become the vanguard of invasion.

We were a happy crowd even though all leave was cancelled on the mainland. The island was overrun with troops of all nationalities and an air of expectation prevailed. Most of the troops I spoke to knew they had a job to do but underneath there was fear of the unknown and the Solent was full of landing craft.

After D Day there was an eerie silence that June morning and we realised the day had come. All the girls with dates with a sailor were dumped.
