Thomas Wells was born in 16 Baileys Street, Newcastle, but was brought up in Biker, Newcastle. When he was 17 years old he decided to join the army. This is mainly because as a child he had not been on many holidays. So he thought that he would have a 2 week holiday with the Editorial Army, in Rector. Thomas Wells worked as a qualified male nurse, in the Royal Army Medical. In 1938, Thomas had another two week break, this time to Whitby. In 1939, the Second World War started, and France was to fight the Germans on Sunday 3rd September at 11:00am. Thomas was in France before the war actually broke out, and there was no fighting for 6 months. In 1940, for six months, war started, and people were fighting throughout. Six month later, in Dunkirk, fighting was low, and it had calmed down.
Then Thomas went to a port in the North of France, and he had to make his own way back. This took three days to get a rowing boat, so then he could row over the channel to get back to England. When he got back to England, Thomas was told that England was expected to be invaded, so the army went down onto the beaches, so that when the Germans got their, it was expected and they were ready for it.
Next was the Battle of Britain, in which the RAF did a great job. He was sent to Middle East, and arrived in Egypt, in which he stayed there and then fought the Germans in Africa.
After there, they were sent to Cyprus, and the British Government thought that Cyprus were going to attack, so they got them to defend them. Next they went to Israel, and then Iraq, there they stayed for a few month. While they were there, they were under threat that the Germans were coming over because they wanted the Suez Canal, and Germany thought that England were there. So they came to Egypt, and fought in Libya against Germany, in a big battle. Then Thomas was took prisoner, and took to Suani Ben Adem. The British Government went to Tripoli Africa, and lots of his friends and family died there, because of several reasons, the main ones being lack of water, starvation, and many diseases. Next he was taken to Sicily in Italy, where he was there for a few months, and he escaped into Southern Italy, he was there for several weeks, before getting captured again by the Germans. Then he was taken to Germany, where he had to work in a stone quarry. In 1945, he escaped yet again, and got to the American Lines by himself. By this time he could speak pigeon German, because he had picked it up off people around him. He was there a while and it was a week before he saw anyone English. He got seven shillings a week, and had an identity card. He said 2Hitler changed millions of people鈥檚 lives and killed millions of people, all because he wanted to rule the whole of Europe!鈥
